Who we are (Vision, Mission, and Values)

AWWA’s vision is that all African women and children worldwide have optimum quality of life. A world

  • free from hatred, violence and poverty
  • of equal opportunities and rights
  • that is prosperous and secure for all
  • where all can express their needs and priorities
  • where Government listens and acts so that their needs are at the heart of Government policy
  • in which every human being is respected and is able to achieve their potential, living free from harm and discrimination.

Our part in working towards this vision is...supporting and standing up for a diverse and thriving African women and children’s community

AWWA’s mission is to help alleviate poverty, build meaningful and sustainable development among African women and children through capacity and capability building as well as change education in which all women and children can make informed choices about various issues and concerns in their communities.

All this is based on the premise that women and children are actively engaged in their communities at all levels of decision making as empowerment tools and change agents as well the people who relay matters in any interventions involving them as beneficiaries.

What does AWWA do?

Human rights and security are at the centre of all AWWA's efforts which focus on four strategic goals:

What we do (2010-13 Strategic goals, Business plan, Annual reports)

Our strategic goals for 2010-2013 are:

  1. To reduce women and children’s poverty and exclusion
  2. To seek the views of and empower, socially excluded and marginalised women
  3. To promote African women and children’s rights
  4. To fight violence against women and children
  5. To achieve gender equality in decision making and service provision
  6. To promote active civic participation by and for women and children in international development
  7. To make institutions more accountable regarding gender equality, to strengthen the voice of women's rights advocates, and to change harmful and discriminatory practices in society
  8. To build the capacity of the African women and children’s groups
  9. To improve our national and international reach
  10. To achieve financial stability and independence for AWWA

To pursue these goals AWWA works at different levels. We work with communities, other groups and organisations and policy makers.

AWWA’s Directorate (Trustees, Board Meetings and other related documents)

The work of AWWA is supported by a Directorate made up of a small team of volunteers. The team is led by our Chair, Martha Osamor and our Secretary, Lorraine Dongo. Supporting each other, they manage the organisation day to day business and lead on much of the policy work, external interface (outreach and communications work).
The AWWA Directorate is often assisted by volunteers and interns from the UK and overseas. For more information about current internship and vacancy opportunities please get in touch with us.

Trustees

Trustees are required to act in the interest of the organisation and not to represent their own personal interests. Collectively they have a wide range of relevant skills and experience.

The trustees are responsible for the overall strategic direction of AWWA, ensuring that it fulfills its charity obligations. Day to day management of the organisation is delegated to staff and volunteers through the Chair.

Our Board meeting are held every two months. For more details on our board meetings contact us.
